HI, My name is Jessica Green. I want to let you Self advocates know that many individuals with Down syndrome have low metabolism. Here are some things you should be aware of when it comes to Metabolism.

1. Metabolism 2. Exercise 3. Portion size 4. eating out

America has a high risk of Obesity. Obesity is one of the more long-term health problems the often effects people with down syndrome one studied showed that 22% of the children with Down syndrome studied considered overweight and 55% of this study group become overweight between their first and second birthday, and 23% were classified as overweight in their third year. Parents and Caregivers should not put children on diets unless they are eating unhealthy. Their are three ways to adapt for this difference in metabolism: Increase activity, limit calories, increase activity and calories. Regular activity has many health benefits increased muscle tone, decreased resting heart rate, decreased blood pressure, a sense of well-being, better sleep, and an increased metabolism.
